Improving Parkinson’s symptoms with DBS therapy.
Our new website is live!
Meet our new Workers’ Compensation Coordinator.

Parkinson's coupleDBS Therapy can improve quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease.

DBS (deep brain stimulation) therapy can improve the movement symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease. It is also used for the treatment of essential tremors. DBS therapy is FDA-approved and has been used for more than 10 years to help over 100,000 patients.

Why consider DBS therapy to treat Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor?

  • It can improve symptoms such as shaking, stiffness and difficulty moving, without additional medication.
  • It extends the effectiveness of your medication and can provide an additional five hours of good movement control each day, compared to medication alone… that means five extra hours of doing the things you want and need to do on your own.
  • Most people who have DBS therapy take significantly less medication for Parkinson’s and tremors, reducing medication-related side effects.
  • DBS therapy is completely reversible and MRI-safe.

How does DBS therapy work?
A small, pacemaker-like device is placed under the skin in the chest. Very thin wires connect this device to areas on the brain that control movement. The wires send electronic signals to the brain, which block some of the brain messages responsible for symptoms like shaking and uncontrolled movements.

After the device has been placed, your doctor will adjust the settings, personalizing the DBS therapy for your precise needs. You may need a few adjustments to get the best possible results from therapy. Over time, as your symptoms change, your doctor can adjust the device to meet your needs, without the need for further procedures.

Want to learn more?
Regional Brain & Spine physician, board-certified neurosurgeon Dr. Kyle Colle and his team perform this treatment in Cape Girardeau. They partner with an area neurologist, Dr. Robert Gardner, Jr., to perfect this procedure and work closely with patients who undergo DBS therapy to ensure their safety and best possible results.

Dr. Colle can determine if DBS therapy might be right for you or your loved one. He will explain the treatment, answer all your questions and make sure you understand all risks and benefits. You can learn more about DBS therapy and schedule a consultation with Dr. Colle by calling (573) 332-SPINE.

Meet our Workers’ Compensation Coordinator.

Jeff Priest is our Clinical Liaison/Workers’ Compensation Coordinator.
We asked Jeff to talk with us about what he does at Regional Brain & Spine.

Jeff Priest“I help patients who come to us with work injuries and walk them through the entire process. I make sure they are scheduled with the right departments within Regional Brain and Spine and help ensure that they get what they need from our team in a timely manner.

“I also work with Workers’ Compensation case managers, reporting to them and being their liaison with our office. A big part of my role here is maintaining good communication… I help patients understand the tests they need and what tests and treatments are and are not approved under their Workers’ Comp case. I keep Case Managers informed about the patient’s progress and try to streamline the process for everyone involved.

“My goal is to help our patients who have work injuries get better so that they can get back to work and back to their lives.”

Jeff is a lifelong native of Cape Girardeau and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University. He and his wife have three kids and enjoy spending time on their farm, fishing and taking care of their animals.

If you have a work related injury or need to find out more about medical care for an injured worker, call Regional Brain & Spine: (573) 332-SPINE.
